LEGISLATIVE NEWS:

MSA members:  On October 17th a meeting was held to discuss the (continued) issue of licensing sign installers in Massachusetts.  Numerous State Representatives and State Senator Harriett Chandler were present.  State Representative Jim O'Day (Worcester) agreed to be the contact person to represent the legislature.  As you may know, this legislature has been brought before the House before, but had been stopped by the Ways and Means Committee.  Senator Chandler and the Representatives (present) have also agreed to research the reasons it was halted at the Ways and Means Committee.

Thank you to Andy Serrato, Serrato Signs (Worcester) for working with Joe Hamel, Shrewsbury Signs (Shrewsbury) to help "bullet" the important points of this legislation to re-present to Representative O'Day who will then turn it over to the House Council for review.

As of May 1, 2008, all mercury-added products (including fluorescent lamps, some neon lighting, mercury vapor, metal halide, high pressure sodium, and short-arc mercury types) may not be disposed of in the trash.  Improper disposal may result in fines as much as $25,000. per violation per day, by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.  Information on lamp recycling is available at www.lamprecycle.org and www.mass.gov/dep/

More information to come from Massachusetts Sign Association.  Please contact Joe Hamel, MSA President at 508-438-0215 if you have information regarding this topic.
